During the first major series of Gun Control in US history in 1989, China was no longer allowed to import their AK47 rifles. However, they offered a sporter model of the AK47 for the American market, which had its dangerous features, such as the pistol grip, bayonet lug, cleaning rod, and flash hider, removed. The MAK-90 became available to the public around 1990 until the Federal Gun Control Act of 1994 and the complete ban on Chinese rifles and pistols took effect.
